Newark Earthworks

Prehistoric Americans built a mammoth series of earthen mounds for ceremonial, astronomical and social purposes.   Civilizations since have destroyed a good share of this vast complex.







From the visitor center we look into the opening of the Great Circle.  You can see the mounds on either side.   The Great Circle is 1200' in diameter with mounds 8' to 14' high.







On of the paths lead up and over the mound that comprises the Great Circle.
