Napoleon's Chateau de Malmaison

The Château de Malmaison is a country house in the city of Rueil-Malmaison about 7 miles from Paris.

It was formerly the residence of Joséphine de Beauharnais and her husband, Napoleon Bonaparte. With the Tuileries it was the headquarters of the French government from 1800 to 1802.

The Dining Room.  Fontaine redecorated this room in the Pompeian style i 1800.  The eight dancers were painted by Louis Lafitte after the drawings of Percier in 1812.  Berthault added the arches over the doors and windows.  The overall restoration (1985- 1987) enabled to rediscover the delicate tones hidden beneath several layers of paint, the decor of the doors, arches over the windows, and the pilasters of the rotunda.  The tripods and the decor of the wall on the Hall's side have been reproduced after an old photo.

The wardrobe.  This tiny room, opening onto the corridor, with direct access to Napoleon's room, was used as  dressing room and furnished with a small oak cupboard, a bedside table, a toilet and a bidet, all three made of mahogany.

The Emperor's Bedchamber.  Currently twice the size of the original bedchamber, the decor of the present room, realized in 2020, is like the one of 1815.

The guide told us a story about the origins of this photo.  It supposedly depicts Napoleon leading troops over the Alps.  In actuality, he rode a mule and followed the troops.

There was a lot of fancy plates, glasses, decanters and the like on display.

A model of the whole estate

This table is far larger than any I have see in use in the last few decades.

The antechamber.  The usher on duty used to sit in this room.  It was also used to store gaming tables not in use in the billiard room.

Love these wall sconces.

Funny that the Council room is done up like a campaign tent
