Skara Brae is located on the west coast of the main island of the Orkneys only a 15 drive from the ferry terminal at Stromness. |
We started at the visitor center (middle right). Skara Brae is at the middle left and Skaile House is bottom right. |
A lot of these displays are hard to read so you might have to click to enlarge them. |
The inside of the roof. |
The walk to Skara Brae was depicted as a walk back through time with concrete markers denoting notable events in history. Pictures of a few of them follow. |
We took a short detour to the coast. Skara Brae is above the small bluff in the mid-distance. |
Layout of the village |
A wall has been built along the shore to protect the site from further erosion. |
Read the previous post about this room to hear how Captain Cook's ship's dishware came to be house here at Skaile House. |
Love hidden storage areas |
Don't forget to read the post above that tells about the Russian banner in the frame halfway up the staircase. |
There's a room full of historical documents and interesting history of the home and its owners. |
