Itay - Pisa

During our trip from Florence to Vernazza, we got off the train to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  The tower is in a complex of buildings on the Field of Miracles.

Pisa's leaning tower is far from the only leaning tower in Italy, just the most publicized.    It leans 15' off center.  As you can tell from this photo, it started leaning during construction and the later builders tried to correct the lean.  It was built over two centuries by a minimum of three different architects.

The Field of Miracles also includes a Cathedral and

a Baptistery.

Of course we climbed the 294 steps to the top.  The middle is hollow.

The final level was reached by spiral steps leading to this opening.

The marble steps are well worn by millions of visitors every year.

Of course this is a campanile so there are bells at the top.

What amazed me is that they were all different.  Don't know if they were the originals or not.

On the street below we could see an interesting transportation vehicle.

It was a train engine-shaped vehicle pulling three cars.

The Baptistery looked like it had a partially tiled roof.

We walked along the railing at the top of the wide part of the tower.

The statue of the She-wolf with Remus and Romules that was on the grounds.

We decided to walk back to the train station.  Along the way we saw a couple of people pretending to be statues.  He had a metal plate base (under the red rug) that he could lean on to hold this pose.

Due to the small size of the streets in Italy cities, Postal vehicles were small. 



The Arno River runs through Pisa.

Police vehicle at the station was a Fiat Punto
